Call for Special Sessions

Background

Call for Special Sessions

The Organizing Committee of ICASSP 2027 invites proposals for Special Sessions for the conference in Toronto, Canada. Special Sessions address emerging topics in signal processing that may not arise from the regular submissions to the conference through the technical committees.

Please read the submission guidelines below carefully before submitting your proposal.

Proposal Requirements

Each proposal should be a single PDF document that includes:

  • A session title and a list of session organizers, including their email addresses.
  • A list of at least six committed papers, including:
    1. Title;
    2. List of authors; and
    3. A short abstract for each paper.
  • A proposal write-up (limited to 400 words) that includes:
    1. The motivation for organizing the special session;
    2. The collective quality and potential impact of the committed papers;
    3. The most relevant Technical Committees of the IEEE Signal Processing Society; and
    4. A justification of why the papers are better suited for a special session than for regular submission.

No individual may appear as an author or co-author on more than one paper considered for a single special session. An exception may be made when the first paper is an overview paper (preferably authored by the organizers). In this case, the co-authors of the overview paper may also be co-authors of one additional paper in the same session.

ICASSP 2027 will require in-person presentation of all accepted papers. Therefore, at least one author of each accepted paper must be available to present the paper in person.

Important Dates

Special Session Proposal Deadline 17 July 2026
Special Session Acceptance Notification 14 August 2026
Special Session Paper Submission Deadline 16 September 2026

Proposal Selection

Special session proposals will be evaluated based on, in order of importance:

  1. The proposed session topic;
  2. The potential quality and impact of the collection of papers; and
  3. The qualifications of the proposers and participants.

A special session should preferably address an emerging topic in signal processing that is not fully aligned with a single Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.

Special Session Acceptance

Selection of a special session proposal does not guarantee the final acceptance of the special session. Final acceptance of a special session for ICASSP 2027 depends on the quality of the papers submitted to the session.

Special session submissions will undergo a rigorous review process similar to that for regular submissions. If the number of high-quality submissions is insufficient to support a special session, the conference organizers reserve the right to:

  1. Merge special sessions;
  2. Add regular-submission papers to a special session; or
  3. Cancel the special session.

In the event of cancellation, the conference organizers will make every effort to accommodate accepted papers within regular sessions, subject to approval by the relevant Technical Committees.
