BIO

José M. F. Moura is the Philip L. and Marsha Dowd University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He holds the Engenheiro Electrotécnico degree from Instituto Superior Técnico, and the MSc., EE, and D.Sc. in EECS degrees from MIT.  He was Professor at IST, Genrad Visiting Associate Professor and Visiting Professor at MIT, and Visiting Professor at New York University. His research is in statistical and distributed (peer-to-peer) signal and image processing and data science and he introduced algebraic and graph signal processing. He holds 19 patents, the technology of two of which (co-inventor Alek Kavcic) is the adaptive sequence detector in the read channel of over five billion hard disk drives (60% of all computers sold since 2003) and was the subject of a 2016 $750 million infringement settlement between Carnegie Mellon University and a major chip manufacturer (then, the largest IP settlement ever in the IT area).

Moura was Editor in Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, President of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and 2019 IEEE President and CEO. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, AAAS, and the US National Academy of Inventors, and a member of Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, Portugal, and of the US National Academy of Engineering. He has received doctor honoris causa by the University of Strathclyde (Scotland, UK), by Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), and by York University (Canada). He was awarded the Great Cross of Prince Henry bestowed to him by the President of the Republic from Portugal. He received the Claude Shannon-Harry Nyquist Technical Achievement Award and the Norbert Wiener Society Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal “[f]or contributions to theory and practice of statistical, graph, and distributed signal processing.” He received the IEEE Haraden-Pratt Award “[f]or sustained leadership, global service, and outstanding contributions enabling new opportunities for IEEE and its members.”
